PLUG: Walk Against Warming

arleeshar's picture

Saturday November 4th 2006 is the International Day of Action Against Climate Change.

Come join the unexpectedly popular rally and Walk Against Warming, which will start at 11am from Martin Place in Sydney (and various other places mentioned on their website). Strollers and raffia decorations will be out in force, so strap on your mandals and get in early to ensure your top spot next to the Parents and Friends.

This day of climate action demands

deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions through:
- renewable energy guarantees
- no new coal fired power or mines
- better public transport

The event is coordinated through the Nature Conservation Council of NSW which is a peak environmental NGO in NSW and a non-profit body.

Fabian Society, Robert Ray, and The Eternal Questions

There are some questions of modern Australia that, like Zen riddles, invite only introspection, melancholy and furious frustration. These are questions like: How can we make public transportation work in sprawled cities? With whom are we at war? Which is the one true code of football? And, the greatest chestnut in the whole tin of pickled vinegary nuts, what to do about ALP factionalism?

Thus charged, the NSW Fabian society sat down last night, Wednesday the 20th, to hear the words of the sages: Carmen Lawrence, Evan Thornley and Robert Ray.

Everybody's Talking Fabian!

liam's picture

The noun/adjective on everybody’s lips at the moment is Fabian. Far more interesting and exciting than that word used to describe the model, the Fabian Society is a group of people dedicated to promoting democratic socialist ideals, and suggesting means for their adoption.

John Quiggin has published, in full, a rather good letter from socialist stalwart and historian Tristan Ewins, the sentiments with which I broadly agree: up with the S-word! Nicholas Gruen fell victim to self-organising-gone-disastrously-wrong, while over at Catallaxy, Jason Soon denies the Fabian world conspiracy, and the Currency Lad is posting semi-book length extracts from the NCC’s Santamariaist manifesto.

You can’t get away from collectivism run rampant, and you can certainly hurry to jump the rolling bandwagon at the next NSW Fabian Society event:

Fabian Society: What Makes A Good School?

liam's picture

What does make a good school?

We hear constantly about problems confronting our primary and secondary schools. The buildings are under funded and teachers under resourced. Private schools are hiking fees and facing strikes yet there is a drift of students away from public high schools. The values and curricula our kids learn is accused of being dumbed down by ‘postmodernism’ and political correctness, yet NSW teachers continue to achieve stunning results in selective and comprehensive schools. Private schools share of federal money increases with few strings attached. Perhaps its time to move beyond the public/private confrontation and consider what works across systems?

My short answer is no, no, factions aren’t killing the Labor Party, it’s the stupidity and the shallow gene pool that are doing in the cause of organised labour in Parliament. I’ll look forward to the speakers having their say though.

Dean Byrne Benefit Night

Below are the details for a benefit for a truely tragic situation. If you are a fan of one of the clubs involved, or a League fan in general, please consider attending. Players do so much to entertain us and when they are seriously injured before becoming stars there is little they can do to provide for themselves.

Fabian Society: Ministerial Accountability

The NSW Fabian Society’s next event is on ministerial accountability, and its future. Details are below the fold.

To accompany FIFA’s prestigious Golden Boot award for most goals scored during the World Cup, the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers’ Union (LHMU) is awarding soon its own prestigious award.

Let me introduce you to the Golden Toilet Brush Award, for the building managers or body corporate who least take care of their tenants and/or treat worst their cleaning staff. In the careful words of the union:
