CEO remuneration "a response to market demands"??

Greig Gailey, president of the [Business Council of Australia](http://www.bca.com.au/) this morning on the [ABC's AM](http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2008/s2171121.htm):

> PETER RYAN: What about executives in the corporate world, especially those on multi-million dollar packages at the big end of town that you represent. Do they also need to show restraint and consider taking a pay freeze?
>
> GREIG GAILEY: Well that's a separate issue and I'm not going to take a position on that. But what we're seeing there is, I guess, *a response to market demands* which is about shortages in the economy.

Is he seriously arguing that when the [average CEO salary](http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2008/02/22/1203467388934.html?page=fullpage) of a top 100 Australian company is four million dollars, that's a simple case of supply and demand? No matter how good they are, I'm quite sure no CEO is worth anywhere near some of the ridiculous salaries they are paid. If this is the result of the market setting the prices, sounds like a case of market failure to me.

Meet You At The Town Hall Steps

Guy from [Polemica has wrapped up the Danish Solution](http://www.polemica.info/archives/2007/12/public_spaces_f.html) to Sydney's CBD 'problems'.

>Seeing how other countries have managed their urban areas has provided quite a bit of insight into what we do well in Australia, and what we don't do so well.

Boys are Built Different!

Taking a break from our usual sporadic youtube coverage mixed with nasty jibes about the forthcoming election, I give you a Tonka commercial from the US which I very much hope they don't re-dub and schedule to play here this Christmas:

Why buy your small son a Tonka? Because Boys are just built different! They pull your favourite flowers up by the roots, tear up your Stepford-wife house with their dog-chasing antics and probably shit all over the floor when they're off camera, and it's totally because they're Boys, not because they're toddlers! Because they're built different! Different to Girls! And Tonka is built for Boys! Not for Girls! Because two year old Girls would cut the flowers with secateurs, arrange them with proto-Geisha flair, wrap them in ribbon and present them to you on a tray with breakfast! Two year old girls would bathe and blow dry the dog, pick up the blocks, and eschew the truck because it didn't come with a Barbie! Because that's what Girls do! They're Like That! Boys are just Built Different!

Fuckers.via
