IR Rally: Sydney
I went down to Belmore Park this morning with about twenty or thirty thousand other people to protest against the radical anti-union IR legislation. There were more in Martin Place and more groups meeting across the country. Will it have an effect, or stop the Government passing the legislation? You’d think a massive demonstration of community opposition would be enough for most Governments. We’ll find out soon for which “All Of Us” the Coalition governs.
It’s been an amazing day for organised employer groups. Sol Trujillo is an absolute genius for timing, and Adsteam Marine has set the standard for employer militancy:
Queensland Council of Unions spokesman Laurie Horgan says the workers were told of their dismissal within 15 minutes of telling management they were going to the rally.
Australian workers, this is your future.

Great stuff comrade. I couldn’t make it but by the sounds the rallies were successful and well-attended all over.

I’ve got a heap of photos from the Melbourne rally – about 200,000 on the streets. Amazing. I’ll put them up tomorrow.

T’was a great day indeed! I haven’t been feeling well of late but today certainly lifted my spirits.
Even the Uruguayan soccer team got into it.

It was a pretty impressive display.
What I loved most was the cheers that went up for Brown. Wow. I should stop reading RWF blogs and get back in tune with real folk.
And the Boeing fella who spoke down at Chifley Sq was the highlight. Like me and my mates, he spoke from a position of “what’s happenin’ to us will happen to you and that’s why we’re fightin’”. And quote of the day: “Don’t vote for the bastard!”
