I didn't elect Janette Howard
Mind you, I didn’t elect John either. But I concede at least that he has some small claim to electoral mandate for his decisions on important matters of state.
Like, for instance, the all consuming choice of the official APEC Conference Outfit. The Labor eHerald reports that the “First Lady” has personally had a hand in the sartorial side of things:
John and Janette Howard have chosen the design of the national costume that the leaders of the twenty one member economies will wear on the last day of the APEC summit, but officials refused to say what design has been picked, saying that would give away the surprise. No doubt the cost of the outfits will also be a ‘surprise’ to taxpayers.
This really peeves me. Especially when I encounter reports that this terrible mistake in the choice of fashion adjudicators - allowing proximity to triumph over expertise - has led to the APEC leaders predictably being forced to model a custom version of our National Poncho.
Of course, I am not at all surprised by the (rumoured) foul choice of accoutrement, as this is entirely in line with the Mu-mu theme of previous APEC summits:
