NOW! (now now now) NOW! (now now now)
Watching Rudd’s entrance to ALP National Conference today, I was struck by the power of bland.
Mostly this was to do with the hotly anticipated Entrance Song. Last conference, which I did not attend or view via SKY, was marked fatally by Latham’s entrance to INXS’ “New Sensation”, which apparently relieved large swathes of the audience of their breakfasts by pronouncing, just as the Failed Great Man entered the room,
the sun comes like a god
Into our room
All perfect light and promises
I have to admit to a certain schadenfreude, and so was terribly disappointed that there was no “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” or “Climb Every Mountain” or “Simply The Best” or something by Snoop Dogg or something.
Rudd’s team instead chose the Whitlam/Little Patty route and ordered a new song from the hitmaker behind such bland as Delta Goodrem, entitled “A Change In the Weather”. However, while “It’s Time” was a powerful national hit, I have a strong feeling that “A Change in the Weather” will not be. With the refrain
Now (now now now)
I see it now (now now now)
I hear it now (now now now)
I feel it now (now now now)
Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
it lacks both intellectual and lyrical punch and fervour, and neither will the slackly swelling music stir the heart of the nation. It’s not really bad, per se, it’s just incredibly bland. And the slogan “Now” is so university politics, I can smell the hot chips and gravy.

PS I thought Rudd’s actual speech was reasonably good in sentiment, especially his discussion of compassionate policy, and - depending always on the how the policy detail works out - I was happy. NOW now now now. Although I would advise his media staffers to bind his right hand to his hip to prevent the travesty of his limp attempts at the solidarity fist.
